Just over 1,000 feet outside the Roman settlement of Pintia in northern central Spain sits the largely undisturbed Iron Age cemetery of Las Ruedas. Since 2004, archaeologists working at the site have discovered around 150 burials associated with the Vaccean culture, a Celtiberian people who occupied the region from the fifth century B.C. until the Roman conquest. The excellent preservation of many of the burials has brought to light an impressive assortment of grave goods from the Iron Age, including war implements and Celtic domestic goods. Over the past several seasons, director Carlos Sanz has uncovered cremation tombs and warrior burials on the margins of the cemetery. This season, the archaeology team will begin excavating some of the unexplored areas of the necropolis. |
