Around the globe, humans made a critical transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture. This radical change set in motion many transformations in human population size, social organization, and human–environmental relationships. The reasons for this transition are poorly understood. The Mesa Verde region in southwest Colorado is ideal for studying this transition, which occurred in this area during the Basketmaker III period (A.D. 500 to 750). The Pueblo people, who live in the area today, are direct descendants of the Basketmakers; it may be possible to trace their origins to ancient Basketmaker III societies. |
