Help excavate, study, and conserve the ancient seaside city of Populonia, an ancient center of metalworking and trade. Your team will focus on two fascinating sites: the almost unexcavated Etruscan cemetery of San Cerbone and the early Roman section of Populonia where iron smelting took place. The tombs you’ll help uncover in San Cerbone were buried beneath iron slag heaps between the fourth and first centuries B.C., when the cemetery was abandoned to make room for growing industry. Misguided excavators used machines to dig through the slag heaps at the beginning of the 20th century, partially destroying many tombs in the process. Your work is key to understanding and preserving a site that might otherwise be lost or looted. |
