An expedition inside Krubera-Voronja, the world’s deepest cave, has increased the depth by another 5 meters (16 feet). According to initial reports, on August 10th Ukrainian cave diver, Gennady Samokhin, extended the depth to -2196 meters (-7205 feet) during a 50.5 meter (166 foot) dive in terminal sifon in the cave’s main branch. The previous world depth record was set on a Ukrainian Speleological Association expedition in 2009, when Gennady Samokhin reached a depth of -2191 meters (-7188 feet) during a 46 meter (151 foot) dive in the sifon. |
