A lemur population and ecology study in an area of mid-altitude rainforest close to the village of Antenina in the Zahamena Reserve, north east Madagascar. The study determined which lemur species are present at the study site, estimated population densities for the diurnal species, estimated lemur community biomass and investigated the main factors influencing lemur distributions within the study site. In addition, field tests to assess the appropriateness of the use of loud calls for rapidly assessing population densities in 2 highly vocal lemur species were conducted. Results suggest that, although lemur species richness is high and biomass is fairly typical of eastern rainforest communities, human disturbance is having an effect. It was concluded that pressure on the forest needs to be carefully monitored and controlled, including the buffer zone area.. |
