YASUNI NATIONAL PARK EXPEDITION, ECUADOR 1999
The Yasuni National Park Expedition was a nine-week research project with the Huaorani of Ecuador. The Huaorani were the last of Ecuador's indigenous groups to be contacted by missionaries in 1956. The eight researchers from Royal Holloway, University of London, worked with the Huaorani to examine the issues surrounding tourism in their communities and to document developments to their culture and way of life. The team were accompanied by a survival expert from Ridgefellows Outdoor Training Ltd. The Expedition Leader and Safety Officer (both now Ridgefellows Outdoor Training Ltd.) returned to the Huaorani communities in May-June 2000. The purpose was to distribute the report and carry out research regarding the possibilities of placing a Medical & Research Centre in the Huaorani territory.
